The multimedia Los Angeles artist, born in 1982 has works displayed around many museums around the world, such as: Los Angeles County Museum of Art (LACMA); Whitney Museum of American Art, Museum of Modern Art, New York (MoMA); Centre Pompidou, Paris; Moderna Museet, Stockholm; etc. Alex Israel's artwork concepts explore his own fascination with the idea of Hollywood and the celebrity culture around the 'American dream'.
His artworks illustrates his anthropological curiosity while showcasing the clichés and aesthetics of the scenic entertainment capital. He is very well-known for his iterations of the Los Angeles' skyline with airbrush gradients that feel like a movie backdrop.
Here are some of his brand collaborations and partnerships:
(2019) Alex Israel x Louis Vuitton: The Artycapucines
This partnership featured an allusion his artwork "The Wave", which focuses on Californian surfer culture. It portrays different shades of wet-suits and tanned skins and the beautiful skyline of the coast. The highly detailed leather bag was part of a collection to reimagine the classic LV handbag Artycaucine and this collaboration only had 300 bags available for sale.
(2019) Alex Israel x RIMOWA
The collection features two color gradient palettes aluminum suitcases, both inspired by his artworks 'Sky Backdrop' and 'Untitled (Flat)'. Through the gradient colors it is possible to see the sunset and sunrise. The collection also features color matching wheels, luggage tags and an exclusive set of stickers designed by the artist illustrating iconic LA landmarks.
(2020) Alex Israel x Louis Vuitton: California Dream
This Louis Vuitton partnership dedicated to the West Coast was originally supposed to launch at 2020's Coachella. Featuring the in-house master performer Jacques Cavallier Belletrud, this collection was inspired by the LA sky at dusk and nature shades that are part of the west coast.
(2020) Alex Israel x Cha Cha Matcha
This partnership is Cha Cha Matcha was inspired by his artwork Sky Backdrop. The soft-serve flavors match the gorgeous tones of the packaging. The ice-cream features healthy ingredients and superfoods such as strawberry, vanilla and blue green algae (spirulina). It is filled with protein, iron, magnesium, beta-carotene, vitamins B1-3 and antioxidants.
I'm absolutely in love with all these iconic collaborations. In my opinion the artist elevated and enriched these brands beautifully. It is possible to observe how consistent the artist is and his brand overall. I really like how he successfully transported his art and concepts through all these different mediums. When talking about his gradients, the balance of color and smoothness are remarkable and striking. It evokes so many feelings and thoughts. Creating such gradients is an incredibly complex task and it demonstrates an amazing vision.
